Writer's Workshop:
This week we started working on persuasive essays. We discussed the features of a persuasive essay. In addition, we discussed different sides of controversial issues. The students really got involved in the discussions.
Next week we will continue to work on them. We will analysis different persuasive essays. We will identify the problems and solutions in the essays. We will also discuss the importance of selective research, statistical information for charts and graphs, and how to organize ideas for their persuasive essays.

Writer's Workshop
This week the students learned about conjunctions, and combining sentences; compound and complex. They also watched a video about the Honor Flight and wrote letters to the veterans that are going on the flight. They wrote some great letters. Some of them brought tears to my eyes.
Next week the students will learn about run-on sentences and sentence fragments. We will finish up on sentences next week. They will review what we have learned and take a test over sentences next Friday.

This week the students learned about subjects in interrogative and imperative sentences. They also learned about compound subjects, compound predicates, and compound sentences. In addition, they used what they learned to write their own short paragraphs.
Next week the students will write complex sentences, learn the about run-on sentences and sentence fragments.

In addition, they learned about complete subjects and predicates and simple subjects and predicates. They also learned the helping verb song and the verb is the word rap.

This week the students learned the correct way to add dialogue in their stories. We also discussed how alliteration, assonance, and consonance can make their writing more visual. In addition, we went over the historical fiction and editing check-list before they typed their final drafts. During our writing conferences this week, I was really impressed with their stories.
Next week, they will finish typing their stories and present them to the class.

This week we finished working on our rough drafts of our historical fiction stories. I have been conferencing with some of the students and I am so impressed with their writing! The students have used the research to write the most amazing stories.
Next week we will discuss how to put dialogue into their stories. We will also add alliteration, assonance, and consonance elements into the stories to make them more realistic. Finally, we will use the editing checklists to edit and revise the stories before typing the final drafts.

Writer's Workshop:
This week we started our "Historical Fiction" unit. The students will be writing a story using historical settings and elements. They will create fictitious characters that lived in the time period they are writing about. I look forward to reading their stories. They have come up with a lot of great ideas so far.
Next week I will read examples of historical fiction stories. We will analyze the characters, setting, and different elements of the stories. In addition, we will discuss how dialogue helps make the stories come alive.
Book Orders:
I will hand out book orders next Wednesday. They will be due back on the 26th of January.
